19 MayDisney College Program: Arrival & Check-in

After a sing-along-filled drive south, I flew out of Biloxi, MS to Orlando, FL. I only had one stop in between and I’ve forgotten where that was. Memphis? Maybe…

Anyway! The sing-along was EPIC. I love being in Megan’s car. Who’s Megan? My BFF. I haven’t blogged much about my life, but I guarantee if I -had- made a million blog posts about my day-to-day life, you’d have seen a million pics of Megan and I hanging out, by now.
The playlist:
Backstreet Boys
Disney
John Farnham
Sweeney Todd
JC Chasez
….and more!

Megan and I at the airport in Biloxi

Once I got to Orlando, I stepped off the plane into the second-most obnoxious airport I’ve ever been in. Two steps away from the gate, you’re in an enormous mall and gargantuan food-court. You have to take a monorail-type-thing to get away from both. The longer you wait… the more you want to buy…

Anyway, I was only distracted by the statues outside the Disney store and the HUGE Harry Potter stand-up outside the Universal store… all of which made me spaz and fangirl in public. I think seeing these FINALLY drilled it into my head that I was about to start working for Disney… and live within a few miles of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

That evening, I slept at the Florida Mall Days Inn on Orange Blossom Trail. It’s cheap, near the airport, has a free shuttle from the airport, and has complimentary breakfast. I chose it for those three reasons.

Yeah right, who am I kidding? I chose it because it had FREE INTERNET and I’d been without internet for months. FINALLY, I could stretch out on a bed with a bag of chips and a laptop and just be a geek from sundown to sun-up!

No.

This… supposed… “internet” didn’t work the entire time I was there. However, I can’t really complain. I paid less than thirty bucks to sleep there and they fed me the next morning.

Speaking of the next morning…

CHECK IN DAY!

I checked in on May 19, 2010. This day will always be a milestone for me. It’s the day I officially moved out of state for the first time in my life (though it was not the day I officially became a Disney employee, that’s a tale for another entry.)

Check-in Day Tips
Don’t be afraid to step off the plane and go straight there. It’s not a very taxing process despite being a little long. Also, your luggage will be safe while you do your thing.
Bring your Disney paperwork AND state-issued ID.
Fill out anything you can fill out before coming to Florida. There were several times I just handed over a stack of pre-filled papers while other people had to step out of queues and sit down with pens.
BRING SNACKS. While there may be some places they’d rather you not eat, you’ll not have much time for a meal until all the official stuff is over. Keep some nuts or granola on hand to keep from getting tired & grumpy.
Wear comfy clothes and shoes.
CHARGE YOUR PHONE. About halfway through the day, you’ll be glad to have the company of brickbreaker and txts from your friends back home.

Do you have anymore questions?

Overall, Check-in day was relaxing and productive for me.
I’ll make another post later about my apartment and role, here at Disney!

Thanks for reading!!!
